A HOUSE SHAPED BY ITS SETTING
The Monte Grigio Drive residence is shaped by its hillside setting, with views toward the Santa Monica Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The design draws from the principles of the International Style and the Case Study Houses, using simple forms, open spaces, and strong connections between the interior and landscape.
The placement and massing of the house were developed in response to the site and surrounding neighborhood. The design was also reviewed with neighboring properties to preserve important ocean views and carefully consider the relationship of the new house to the homes around it.
A central courtyard organizes the house and provides a connection between the interior and exterior spaces. It brings natural light and ventilation into the center of the home while creating a more private outdoor space for the occupants. The layout also allows for multiple paths through and around the house, giving the spaces flexibility and allowing the home to function differently throughout the day.
The design focuses on the practical needs of the family while taking advantage of the site's natural qualities. Views, daylight, ventilation, outdoor space, and the relationship to the surrounding neighborhood are treated as integral parts of the design rather than as additions to it.
