Perched on a hillside overlooking Mount Washington, CA, the Lavell Residence was designed to maximize square footage and dialogue with the surrounding landscape. This is achieved by cascading the structure down the slope and carving a double-height space in the living room to allow its inhabitants to catch stunning views from various levels. To relate to the two adjacent homes’ roof heights, we proposed creating a hybrid roof-shaped between a flat and ‘A” frame, with an open trellis wrapping the rear facade.  The use of large floor-to-ceiling windows allows ample doses of natural light into the home. At the same time, the decks on every level maximize square footage, granting visual access to the area’s surroundings.
